Hi ,
Here in Oregon we are officially on order to "stay-home" for all non-essential activities. However, that doesn't mean the learning has to stop! In fact, just yesterday I learned a little something after we saw a few hummingbirds start to make their first spring visits. Unfortunately, I didn't have my feeders up and ready for them at the time. I've been too busy working, homeschooling, canceling spring break
vacations, stocking my freezer, and obsessively checking the news a few more times than necessary.
We happened to be on the front porch yesterday when the hummingbirds arrived, and my middle son shrieked "Look, the hummingbirds are back!" He was so excited to see them, but quickly realized that our bright red flower feeders were not yet hung up for spring. "Oh man," he said."Guess they are going to be hungry today..." and I immediately thought of a verse that adorns the walls of our
home:
"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
Matthew 6:26 NIV
The birds will be fed. God will provide.
My children will be fed.
God will provide.
And so today, instead of anxiously bouncing around the house taking inventory of our cupboards as we frantically clean, we are stopping to make time to hang up our hummingbird feeders. Not only so we can take joy in the caring for God's creatures, but to bring a hope of something familiar during this unfamiliar time. It's a treasured gift to watch
the children smile in excitement of their new spring visitors. So, for this moment, we are slowing down...and taking inventory in another way by counting our blessings.
We are blessed to be home.
Blessed to be together.
Blessed to be safe, warm and sheltered.
Blessed to be healthy, and blessed to be provided for.
There is not much more one could ask for.
With hummingbirds on my mind this week, I thought it would be fun to put together a simple set of activities and resources for children to learn and care for hummingbirds. With the entire nation at home, learning about birds is a great way to reignite excitement about learning.
So, if you're looking for a fun hands-on science unit to try with your kiddos next week, I've got the perfect solution. Our Free Hummingbird Unit Study will provide you with free printable activities, art projects, and simple animal
science resources that will delight your little ones. Students will make their own nectar, build their own hummingbird feeder, and create a model of a hummingbird nest. This is a fantastic way for students to get creative while learning all about these amazing creatures. Click Here for
